Motorhome Tourism advice

'Kiwis are a laid-back bunch; we have a relaxed way of life and we are very proud of our country. It would be a good idea before you come here, out of respect for the Tāngata whenua (people of the land), to read a little about customs and etiquette. Make sure you enjoy the scenery, eat lots of fish and chips and kai moana (seafood) and leave no trace of your presence other than your tyre tracks. Breathe in as much of the spirit of Aotearoa as you can and leave kissed by the sun, culture and warmth of the people. Arohanui (much love).'

Facilities

Make sure you pack for the season: One of the dangers of the NZ climate is our fierce sun and many tourists end up burned in a matter of minutes, so always pack plenty of sunscreen during the summer. Even on cloudy days you will burn.

NZ is extremely proud and passionate about its clean environment, so please while here be a “tidy Kiwi” and never leave a trace of where you have been - except for your tyre tracks of course!

Practise beach safety and swim between the flags, as NZ has many treacherous beaches, especially along the west coast. By swimming between the flags, you can enjoy the surf and know that you are being watched over.

Pack or purchase insect repellent. Although NZ mosquitoes and sandflies do not carry dangerous diseases they can be quite prolific due to our semi-tropical climate, so protect yourself from aggravation!

If you would like to purchase a Top 10 Holiday Park membership, which will save you 10% on your stay at the holiday parks, go to www.top10.co.nz/club.html or purchase from any Top 10 holiday park.

Some good websites to look at before you travel are:

Heads Up on the native language (te reo)

  • Kia Ora – you will probably here this more than anything else in Maori. It means “hello” and “thank you”
  • Aotearoa – New Zealand (land of the long white cloud)
  • Kai – Food
  • Moana - Ocean
  • Kai Moana – Seafood
  • Aroha – Love
  • Whanau – Friends, family, extended family
  • Tena Kaouto – Formal greeting for more than one person
  • Haere Mai – Welcome and enter
  • Iwi – Tribe
  • Bro – Not native Maori but you will find most Maori affectionately call you this!

Pronunciation:

  • R is very short and slightly rolled
  • Wh is pronounced as f - you will find this in almost every Maori placename in NZ
  • Ng is pronounced as the ng in 'singer'
