Facilities
Department of Conservation campsites offer a range of services and facilities but are generally basic, so for your own comfort, you need to be self-sufficient. Camping areas range from basic sites with very limited facilities such as pit toilets and stream water to a few well-serviced grounds with a camp warden, hot showers, lighting and rubbish collection. Freedom camping is permitted except along the Great Walk tracks and wherever there are “No Camping” signs. Make sure you leave no trace of your visit. Take your rubbish with you and dispose of toilet waste appropriately.
Fees
- Serviced Campsites (S) range from NZD 8.00 to NZD 14.00
- Standard Campsites (ST) range from NZD 3.00 to NZD 12.00
- Basic Campsites (B) are free of charge
- Fees are usually collected by a camp warden at serviced campsites and on a self-registration basis at standard campsites.
Motorhome and caravan use
Motorhomes are welcome at all Department of Conservation campsites. There are no dump stations for toilet waste so please use facilities provided in nearby towns. Pick up a list of dump stations from visitor centres or from the Ministry of Tourism website (PDF, 1000K) or ask at Just go when you check for more information on dump sites. Limit generator use between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. and always drive along formed roads. Generators cannot be used in Northland campsites. When using a motorhome or caravan outside a Department of Conservation campsite it should be self-contained and be able to meet the ablutionary and sanitary needs of the occupants for three days. Just go motorhomes are fully self-contained.
